Spike in Hepatitis a Cases across Kerala

Four Districts on High Alert amid Rising Infections

On Wednesday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George instructed officials to enhance the grassroots action plan to address the increasing cases of Hepatitis-A in the state.

The state has seen a significant rise in Hepatitis-A cases, particularly in the districts of Malappuram, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Thrissur.

Health department officials have also been meeting with district and state-level authorities to coordinate their efforts.

As per a government statement, Hepatitis-related deaths have been reported in the Chaliyar and Pothukallu areas of Malappuram. An action plan has been devised after evaluating the prevention and awareness initiatives carried out in these areas.

Jaundice was initially under control in Pothukallu. However, with the emergence of new cases, the district administration, led by the district medical officer and local representatives, convened meetings in both Chaliyar and Pothukallu to bolster prevention efforts, as stated.

All drinking water sources in affected areas have been instructed to be chlorinated. All hotels and restaurants have also been instructed to serve only boiled water.

The Hepatitis A virus impacts the liver and spreads through contaminated food and water, as well as direct contact with an infected individual.

Severe illness is primarily observed in immunocompromised individuals and those with other underlying conditions like HIV and liver disease.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A encompass fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, itching, and jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the eyes, urine, skin, and nails.

Preventive measures include consuming boiled water, refraining from open defecation, and practicing thorough hand washing before eating, among other precautions.
