Mercury to touch 45 degrees?
On Thursday, 16 May 2024, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heat wave conditions will affect Delhi and parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh for the next three days.
Due to the ongoing extreme heat, the mercury in the national capital is expected to soar to 45 degrees on Saturday, as per the weather office.
Earlier this month, the IMD had warned that most parts of India are expected to record above-normal maximum temperatures in May.
In the past 24 hours, Nuapada in Odisha recorded the highest maximum temperature at 44 degrees Celsius.
On Thursday, in the latest weather bulletin, the Met Department said that heat wave conditions will prevail in several parts of Punjab, Haryana, West Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Goa.
On Friday, West Rajasthan will witness severe heat wave conditions, while heat wave conditions will continue in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat and North Madhya Pradesh.
From May 18 to 19, heat wave conditions have been forecast in Delhi too, with the temperature expected to soar to 45 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Amid the intense heat, Delhi on May 6 recorded its hottest day of the year, with a maximum temperature of 41.1 degrees Celsius, which is two notches above normal.
The previous hottest day recorded was on April 27, when the maximum temperature settled at 40.5 degrees Celsius.
